There is a very interesting story behind a Murti named as Ravananugraha. As has been depicted in the Uttara kand- of the hindu epic Ramayana, ten headed and twenty armed Demon king- Ravana had defeated and looted the city of his step brother- Alaka and god of wealth Kubera, which were situated near Mount Kailash. After his victory ,Ravana was returning to his city Lanka but while on his way he happened to see a beautiful place on the hills of Mount kailash. He tried to fly pass the location but his Vimaan ‘Pushpak’ couldn’t take flight near the location.
Ravana met the bull faced dwarf devotee of Lord Shiva- Nandi while he was on his way. He asked Nandi the reason behind the inability of his chariot to fly past the location, to which nandi informed that Lord Shiva and his consort Parvati were enjoying dalliance on the mountains and no one was allowed to pass.
Ravana felt insulted and mocked Shiva and Nandi. Nandi cursed Ravana that monkeys would destroy him when the time comes. This did not stop Ravana, and he decided to uproot the entire Mount Kailash and started lifting it. Terrified by the shaking mountain Parvati grabbed Shiva’s arm but Shiva knew that Ravana was behind the menace and hence he pressed the mountain with his big toe, trapping Ravana beneath the mountain for thousands of years. Ravana cried in pain. As advised by his ministers, Ravana started singing hymns in praise of Lord Shiva for a thousand years. Finally Shiva not only forgave Ravana but also granted him an invincible sword known as- Linga.
