Tirupati Balaji temple or Sri Venkateshwara Swami temple is one of the most famous landmarks of the world on the hills of Tirumala in the Chittoor district of Andha Pradesh, India. This is the richest temple on the earth with overwhelming contributions and donations from the public and the most famous pilgrim destination on the earth attracting the greatest number of people on any given day.Dedicated to Lord Sri Venkateswara, Tirupati Balaji is an incarnation of Vishnu, who is believed to have appeared here to save mankind from trials and troubles of Kali Yuga. Hence the place has also got the name Kaliyuga Vaikuntham and Lord here is referred to as Kaliyuga Prathyaksha Daivam. The  other names of Tirupati Balaji are like Tirumala Temple, Tirupati Temple.


The Temple is constructed in Dravidian architecture and is believed to be constructed over a period of time starting from 300 AD. The Garbagriha (Sanctum Sanctorum) is called AnandaNilayam. The presiding deity, Venkateswara, is in standing posture and faces east in Garbha griha. The temple follows Vaikhanasa Agama tradition of worship. The temple is one of the eight Vishnu Swayambhu Kshetras and is listed as 106th and the last earthly Divya Desam. The Temple premises had two modern Queue complex buildings to organize the pilgrim rush, Tarigonda Vengamamba Annaprasadam complex for free meals to Pilgrims, hair tonsure buildings and a number of pilgrim lodging sites.


Medieval history

The Pallava queen Samavai in the year 966 CE, donated many jewels and two parcels of land(one 10 acres and other 13 acres) and ordered to use the revenues generated from that land to be used for the celebration of major festivals in the temple.The Pallava dynasty, the Chola dynasty, and Vijayanagara pradhans were committed devotees of Lord Venkateswara. The temple gained most of its current wealth and size under the Vijayanagara Empire, with the donation of diamonds and gold.In 1517, Vijayanagara Emperor Krishnadevaraya, on one of his many visits to the temple, donated gold and jewels, enabling the Ananda Nilayam roofing to be gilded.

Modern history

After the dusk of Vijayanagara Empire, the temple went into the hands of Golconda  and then under the French for a short period of time . During the early 19th century the temple went under the rule of the East India Company, who leased the temple for auction to a tenant.In 1843 the East India company transferred the Administration of Temple along with other Temples in Tirupati to Mahants of Hathiramji Muth, who acted as Vicaranakartas. It was under the rule of Mahants for six generations until 1933 when Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams was formed as a result of the TTD Act in 1933.

Srivari Brahmotsavam is the most important annual fête celebrated at Sri Venkateswara Temple in Tirumala-Tirupati of Chittoor District in Andhra Pradesh, India. The event is conducted for nine days during Hindu Calendar month of Āśvina which falls in between the English months September and october.During the festival, the Utsava-murti (processional deity) of the presiding deity Lord Venkateswara, along with his consorts Sridevi and Bhudevi, will be taken on a procession on different Vahanams on the streets(Madaveedulu) surrounding the temple.The celebration attracts pilgrims and tourists from all parts of India and across the world.

Types of Puja

This ancient texts recommends six times puja a day for Vishnu, of which minimum one puja is mandatory.

Prathyusham puja worship should start and finish before sunrise
Prathakala puja worship should start after sunrise and finish before noon
Madhyahna pujaworship should start and finish at noon
Aparahana pujaworship should start when the sun starts to descend
SandhyaKala puja worship should start and finish around the sunset
Nisi pujaworship should start after the horizon is completely dark

Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams

The temple affairs are managed and controlled by the TTD (Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam). TTD has made adequate arrangements to facilitate the pilgrims and to maintain healthy environmental condition on the hills. Guest Houses and various food counters are developed for the benefit of the pilgrims. On the way to the temple, amenities of toilets, shelters and drinking water have been made to facilitate the pilgrims, who come on foot to the temple.
